The Hannah Werning style mural collaboratively done by the first year South Essex GAD students, the first photograph shows the long shot of the mural, which can be found in Southend Victoria shopping centre, next to the toilets.

The second photograph is of my group’s little section yellow-orange. Each person chose their native-to-Essex flora and fauna and was in charge of their board, but we had to work in the groups using the given colour scheme. The two middle boards were entirely done by me, as one of our group members could not come in for the duration of the mural painting, and I also had to work closely with the other two members of my group.

Various life drawings capturing the movement of two dancers who freestyle danced to movie soundtracks for our class

1st drawing - ink on a stick and ink on a Chinese brush
I am pleased with this but I feel that I should have used the ink on a stick more as I like the thin, scratchy quality of the line better

2nd and 3rd drawings - blue, purple and white compressed chalk and charcoal on black paper.
I like the second as there is a good flow between each drawing, thanks to the use of two chalks at once as it enabled me to capture more of the figure in a more fluid motion.
The third drawing consists of more figurative based sketches, which took more time.

4th and 5th drawings- blue and purple compressed chalks on white.
For these drawings I also used both chalks at once, to achieve the fluid, layered look. However the main difference between these two drawings and the rest are that I did these completely blind- both times the drawing surface was completely covered as I drew the figures, leading to this layered up chaos.

‘No Place Like London’ Paper-craft, print and T-shirt
Brief- ‘Adaptations’

This piece is an adaptation of the film ‘Sweeney Todd; The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ which itself is a story which has been adapted many times, from a Penny Dreadful in the Victorian era, to plays, musicals, films and such. For the task we had to choose a film to adapt into paper-craft, and I chose this film as it has already been adapted to become what it is and I particularly like the film.
I took the iconic image of the main character, Sweeney Todd, and tried to make the shading of his clothing look like blood dipping down; then I incorporated one of my favourite quotes from a song in the film ‘There’s no place like London’, and other imagery that relates to the film- a pie, Mrs.Lovett, the houses of Parliament, a barbers blade and a bird cage.

After finishing the paper-craft I then used it as a stencil, by taping it to a silkscreen, and took prints from it which nearly destroyed the paper-craft itself. I then photographed one of the better prints and edited slightly on Photoshop before turning it into a smaller A4 silkscreen which I then used to print my design onto the t-shirt shown above.

I really like it and a few of my friends have already asked for a t-shirt for themselves, so this may be something I sell in the future =3

I am heavily inspired by music, so here are two photos of K’noup, the singer for an amazing band who combine a variety of influences into their sound. I saw them live for the second time at Borderline (a really teeny, cosy little venue near Leceister Square in London) and I took these photos of this lovely man =3 <3

my final pieces for the ‘Adaptations’ Brief
These are photographs of two paper-crafts

I have chosen two different lyrics, from two different songs by the same band, from the same album (City of Evil by Avenged Sevenfold) to adapt and I have combined these lyrics with two different classic Disney characters who I feel correspond well with the lyrics.

The first is the villain, Scar, from The Lion King, and the lyric I have paired him with is ‘Hatred fuels my blood, I’ll burn you down. One king to watch the horsemen fall’ from the song Burn it down, and I have surrounded him with flames as he kills his brother, the king, in the flames to gain the throne and out of jealousy and hatred, and he ends up in the flames himself, at the end of the film. The part about the Horsemen relates to how he commands the hyenas like an army and how he watches the lionesses he is king of suffering and dying of starvation because of his poor leadership.

The second paper-craft is of the Beast, from the Disney film Beauty and the Beast, and the lyric I have chosen is ‘He who makes a beast out of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man’ from the song Bat Country. This lyric is actually quoted from a film, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, based on a book of the same name, but the author took this quote from an 18th century author so this has been adapted many times. I felt it went well with the beast as a character as the beast is only in the situation that he is in (a man in the form of a beast, isolated from society) because of his own selfishness. I made him look more scary by adding more, sharper, bloodstained teeth, bigger horns and wilder fur and I have surrounded him by the roses and their stems as it is an important feature of the film- the rose alone holds the key to this redemption.

I’m really pleased with the level of detail I managed to achieve with these pieces =3

Brief- UAL Printmaking Award
Theme - Subcultures

base layer- brusho inks on the paper
second layer- three silhouettes masked, with yellow printed over the top
third layer- a further two silhouettes added with red printed over the top
fourth layer- additional three silhouettes added before printing the final blue layer of ink over the top

I then removed all of the silhouettes to reveal the final print.

Final piece for the ‘Structures’ Brief

it was approximately 6 foot high and a few feet wide, made entirely using inflated balloons and clear glue.

Locations: a tunnel near Laindon shopping centre and a pathway leading to the tunnel

The idea behind this piece was to capture the feeling of childhood within my structure, hence deciding to use balloons as my building material instead of say wood or paper. I wanted to contrast this brightly coloured fun piece by placing it in a darker, more adult scenario; the pathway I chose is dark and wooded, somewhere that I haven’t often seen children walking through, especially not alone. The tunnel however is often used by parents walking their children to and from school in the morning and afternoon, but of an evening it is often frequented by teenagers and adults that are drug using, smoking or drinking.

I felt these two rather bleak, grimy, adult places were a good contrast to my balloon sculpture so overall I am quite pleased with the final photos.

The top two are taken from a steel plate etching of David Bowie, the Aladdin Sane album cover, the first print is the original, and the second is a ghost print taken from the leftover ink on the plate.

The bottom two are dry point acetate etchings; the first is Jim Root, guitarist for Slipknot in his Slipknot mask, and the second is Marilyn Manson and John Lennon, half and half.

Male and Female designs for a t-shirt print, adapting a lyric from the song ‘Feel Good Inc’ by the virtual band Gorillaz.

the text and windmill island are formed of bubbles which is meant to be symbolic- bubbles often represent freedom, innocence and childhood and I felt this symbolism went well with the lyric as love can be as fleeting as a bubble but the memory of it can stay with you forever, much like a childhood memory; for me particularly memories of bubbles have stayed with me because I was always fascinated by them.

Similarly, in the music video the windmill represents freedom of action and of thought, of breaking free from the constraints and dumbing down of society and freeing your mind, allowing you to think outside of the box, so to speak. For me this links in well with the idea of a bubble, as they are free to roam wherever the wind takes them, and a good, creative or unique idea can be as beautiful and fleeting as a bubble in the wind.

This piece was created with the intention of being part of the final piece for my response to the ‘Adaptations’ brief, and although it was not in the end my final piece I am quite pleased with these outcomes.

The second from last configuration of my ‘Framed’ piece and the neighbouring pieces created by my classmates, who I had to collaborate with
and then the final outcome
inspired by geometric shapes and patterns, as well as Esther Stocker and Aakash Nihalani’s works.

Overall I am very pleased with my piece as it was unique and eye catching, and I had positive feedback from various tutors and fellow students which was very pleasing =3

My piece was created entirely from black electrical tape and took between 6 and 8 hours to complete, including time factored in helping my neighbouring classmates and working with them to create good flow between our peices.

Regarding size, it was 120 cm x 120 cm as when I was conducting small scale tests I found working down from 12 cm by 2cm each time was more effective than from 10 cm and decreasing the size by 1 cm each time, so for the full scale I simply multiplied all measurements by 10. This piece was mainly inspired by a geometric activity we did in maths in secondary school, and it forced me to leave my comfort zone of curved shapes and flowing lines instead turning me to straight lines to create the geometric optical illusion.

The development of my ‘Framed’ Piece
We were given a 2 week task based on the ‘Structures’ brief and it involved coming up with something to fill a blank space in the gallery within the college. Our materials limitations were:
Black electrical tape

black gaffer/duck tape
black wood
black card/paper
Black foam board

Brief: To create a poster related to a theme. My given theme was “virtual” so I interpreted this as the internet and the quote on this visual piece is “We will create a civilisation of the mind in cyberspace” from the Declaration of independence for the internet. I chose this quote as I felt it was especially powerful, and I liked the concept of having almost a separate internet society where freedom of speech is real and the merest of thoughts can be shared instantly to anyone.
After much experimentation with wax as an attempt to mimic synapses which I feel are similar to the internet in structure and in the fact that they aren’t something you can physically see (much like the connections of the internet), I abandoned that line of experimentation last minute and decided to come up with this piece which is supposed to resemble the wires/connections involved in the internet and how confused they can be- hence why the words are only just legible.
We had to present these to the Foundation Diploma as well as each other but I was glad that I received positive feedback for both my ideas and this final piece.
The coloured version was something I came up with as an alternative, just to see how it would change it visually.

The original version will appear when you click on it, not sure why it doesn’t work otherwise ._.

Out of boredom I decided to revisit the charity work, from a different angle. I used another animal charity, WWF, and decided to give the panda logo a spruce up by using the patterns from other animals the charity supports. Literally just made this, so simple but effective!

A series of cupcake jewellery that I designed and hand made myself to raise awareness for the animal charity RSPCA for the Pod Folder work.

The theme for the 3 necklaces is obviously objects/things you associate with animals- the paw print can represent a multitude of animals, the bones are meant to represent dogs- the traditional dog bone- and the logo is self explanatory. The earrings are just supposed to go along with any of the necklaces.
All the charms are on silver chain with lobster claw clasps which i attached to the chain myself.
